Edwin Jenkinson are a family owned fish and shellfish merchant based on the Yorkshire coast at Scarborough.
Edwin Jenkinson, an ex fisherman, set up the business 28 years ago.
Edwin Jenkinson is a family business run by son, Matthew, daughter, Louise and nephew, David who have all worked within the company for between 10 – 15 years.
Edwin Jenkinson operate three factories, one is a vivier facility (live storage of shellfish) located on the West Pier in Scarborough handling and promoting locally caught live lobsters and crabs. One is a fish processing plant, the last fish processing plant located on Scarborough harbour. This location helps to support the local fishing industry as visitors can see locally caught fish from boat to plate. This leaves our new state of the art factory (opened September 2010) which is the shellfish cooking facility located in Scarborough just minutes from our vivier facility. This processing facility cooks locally caught crabs for the UK and European markets. The Yorkshire coast has an abundance of high quality shellfish and in our opinion the best in the British Isles. Logistically we are very well located. A crab that is cooked on a Monday morning will be in Boulogne, France very early on Tuesday morning ready for sale.
Edwin Jenkinson have a modern state of the art processing facility to handle higher quantities of locally caught shellfish, in a local factory which as well as preserving local jobs thus benefitting the local community it also promotes the abundance of high quality shellfish that we have around us.
Most of the crab caught on the Yorkshire coast is sent away to Scotland and Ireland for processing and from there is sent to the market place in a pasteurised state. The pasteurisation is done mainly as transport links from Scotland and Ireland do not allow a fresh cooked product to reach France with a reasonable shelf life, and there are no daily links to markets; transportation is three times a week. Logistically we are very well located. A crab that is cooked on a Monday morning will be in Boulogne, France very early on Tuesday morning ready for sale.
